Free Flu Vaccines Now Available for All Under-Fives

Good news for parents and caregivers: the influenza vaccine is now fully funded for all children aged 6 months up to their fifth birthday.

Originally scheduled to be rolled out in 2027, Pharmac and Health New Zealand have brought this funding forward with immediate effect in response to a recent rise in influenza cases and high rates of hospitalisations among young children.

Because under-fives are experiencing some of the most severe influenza-related illnesses, removing cost barriers makes it much easier to protect our youngest tamariki and their whaanau.

What You Need to Know:

• Eligibility: All children aged from 6 months to under 5 years can now receive the vaccine completely free of charge (no specific medical criteria required).

• The Vaccine: The funded vaccine available for this age group is Influvac Tetra.

• Doses:

  • Children aged 4 years and older generally require 1 dose.

  • Children aged 3 years and under who are receiving their first flu vaccination will generally need 2 doses given at least 4 weeks apart.

With winter illnesses still circulating widely, getting your child vaccinated is the best defence against severe illness, keeping them out of hospital, and stopping the spread to vulnerable family members.
